A Clearer Horizon? - Do CIOs have more clarity about cloud computing?

IT vendors have been accused of badging as ‘cloud computing’ any hardware or software solutions that offer remote access or virtualisation of data centres. One thing is clear, CIOs find this consumer-based, cloud model increasingly appealing. Thus, increasing numbers are migrating access to multi-user applications, or storage and transfer of data, to systems provided remotely by a third party. How much of this is a truly new offering, or more traditional services branded as cloud, is less clear.

To find out how far cloud strategy and usage has progressed, Xantus surveyed CIOs from organisations across a range of public and private sectors and sizes. Overall, the results show that, while there is still a lack of clarity and a reluctance to fully commit to cloud, there is a general acceptance of the benefits and a growing commitment to develop those benefits as far as practicable.
